THe premise of this novel is wonderful. Throughout, the author deftly relates the themes of risk, love and loss to Ellen's early loss of her mother to cancer, all the while asking you consider what really makes a family as well. SEveral years after being disastrously dumped by Leo, bad boy extraordinaire, Ellen has pulled herself off the floor, enrolled in film school, established a successful career and married a "very nice young man." So why would she risk all that to reconnect with Leo, who she just happens to run into on a street corner. The relationships between Ellen and her husband, Ellen and her best friend and college roomate (whose brother she marries) and Ellen and her sister are the strongest part of the book. It's a lovely meditation on coming of age, snobbery, elitism and exactly what it means to "settle" in a relationship. Beautiful and real.
I for sure thought that this was going to go down as one of my favorite books. I love her books, and I love her characters, but this was not her best book. First I want to say that I am an Emily Giffen fan. However, the whole book built up this story, and in the last chapter I felt like nothing happened. It was a great read and I all I wanted to do was to keep turning the page to see what was going to come next. But in the last chapter, I was let down. I don't want to give away to much, but as a whole, it was a good book, but a little disappointing.(Also this was the first book that didn't mention Rachel, Dex, Darcy, or Ethan. that was disappointing for me too)
Great book. I thought that the story was very true to life (well, maybe the ending was a tad optimistic, but I can't complain about that). and that the author did a very good job of showing how complicated love truly is. My first time reading a book from this author, but I look forward to reading her others.
I really liked this book and it was a quick read about an intriguing topic. Still, I prefered Giffin's other books.
Is this a good book. Definately not. Yes. Is this an amazing book. If you need a good light read for a summer car trip, or sitting by the lake, this is perfect.
